Primary headteacher meetings in November 2016

Monday 31st October 2016

The four Primary Area Headteacher meetings took place across the county in November. The minutes of the meetings are available to download below.

The agenda included information from the Local Authority, including an update from Clare Kershaw "Looking to the Future" and information about the current attendance code of conduct and use of penalty notices, particularly in light of the Platt case. The four Area Lead Commissioners updated headteachers on Primary Improvement Matters, including pupil outcomes, Ofsted results and information about Perspective Lite, FFT and Raising the Achievement of Disadvantaged Children.

Headteachers shared some discussion time, focusing on the priorities for EPHA for the year ahead - the collated responses will be available with the minutes of the meetings, once they are produced.

At all of the meetings, the afternoon included a workshop on “Working with pupils who present challenging behaviour” led by Steve Phillips. This was a session focusing on sharing ideas, strategies and support to improve pupil behaviour and staff self-esteem.

In the morning of the North East meeting, headteachers heard from Professor Bill Lucas who focused on “changing the conversation between home and school”. Bill Lucas is an internationally acclaimed thought leader, researcher, speaker and author. His recent book with Guy Claxton, “Educating Ruby - what our children really need to learn”, has opened up a new conversation with parents and teachers. He has written extensively about parental engagement including Engaging parents: why and how for SSAT. The session shared both research evidence and promising practices. In conjunction with this presentation, Adrian Burt presented information about Marvellous Me, an online tool to promote communication with parents. https://marvellousme.com/

The South and West meetings included a presentation from Nick Saunders, who focused on “You can choose your friends….The 6 key skills that turn workplace relationships into results”

Andy Hodgkinson delivered a presentation at the Mid meeting on “how to retain key staff”, which was very well received.
