Year 1 phonics check - a request for primary and infants schools to give ECC an indication of their planned timetable

Thursday 25th April 2013

As you are aware, the Local Authority Statutory assessment team is required to carry out spot checks of the Year 1 Phonics check. Last year we asked primary and infant schools to complete a timetable to indicate when their Y1 Phonics Screening Check will be administered. This information will enable the team to time their visits so as to create the least disruption for you if you are one of the schools selected for a spot check.

2. Please be aware that you need to carry out the phonics screening check for certain Y2 children; the guidance from DfE states:

"all Year 2 pupils who did not reach the required standard of phonic decoding in Year 1 must take the check. Any child currently in Year 2 who was not assessed in 2012 should be considered for the phonics screening check in 2013. If a pupil was disapplied from the check in Year 1 head teachers will wish to consider if that disapplication is still relevant." Children to be considered will include those arriving from overseas and from independent schools.

3. Please email the completed timetable to seona.ford@essex.gov.uk.
