ECC School Improvement Consultancy Service

Tuesday 12th June 2012

The Education Consultancy programme offers guidance and support in relation to a range of school improvement themes, including learning and teaching, assessment for learning, leadership, early years, curriculum, English and Mathematics, Ethnic Minority Achievement, support staff, support for governance and bespoke consultancy built around a school's needs.

Annual subscriptions for specific areas of development, including English and Mathematics, are available.

The Primary programme for 2012/13 has been sent to schools and is available on the EPHA website.

Information has also been sent out to schools about the Reading Recovery scheme.

Reading Recovery is a daily one-to-one intervention programme for the lowest-attaining children in Year 1. Recent national data shows that 81% of these children were lifted to age-appropriate levels of literacy after approximately 18 weeks' instruction.

During a year-long course, teachers are trained to be experts in early literacy and literacy difficulties through 20 fortnightly professional development sessions, school visits, tailored support and daily teaching of four children. Reading Recovery teachers are able to:

  • Develop their observation and assessment skills
  • Contribute to school improvement by raising standards in early literacy
  • Provide in-house professional development for all those involved in early literacy

Your Reading Recovery teacher can also help you to ensure that, as recommended in the Rose Review, interventions are:

  • Focused on the right children, through careful assessment and tracking of progress
  • Used early before literacy failure has become embedded
  • Time limited with clear entry and exit criteria
  • High quality and have maximum long-term impact

As central funds currently remain available in Essex to support the development of ECaR, we are able to offer this exciting development opportunity for only £500 per teacher.

If you would like to find out more about Reading Recovery please come along to one of the information meetings (see attached) or contact one of the ECaR consultants:
