Mathematics Specialist Teacher (MaST) Programme

The programme:

This will be the third year that Essex have delivered the MaST programme alongside Canterbury Christ Church University and feedback from teachers and head teachers has been excellent.

Teachers have described the programme as

‘Very motivating'

‘Extremely worthwhile'

‘Realistic and practical '

‘Changing the way I teach'

Who should participate?

Should be:

  • Permanent member of staff (0.6 fte minimum)
  • Enthusiastic about and committed to developing the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to become a Mathematics Specialist teacher
  • Well placed to lead improvements in the teaching and learning of mathematics in their school and have a good working relationship with the school's leadership team
  • Prepared to undertake personal, extended professional learning activities, maintain a professional learning log and undertake professional development tasks that will involve them carrying out in-school support to colleagues
  • Willing to engage in Masters level (QAA L7) study and assignments

Could be:

  • Teachers with 2 or more years teaching experience with an interest in mathematics but with no prior experience as a maths leader
  • Mathematics manager or Leading Mathematics Teachers who want to develop subject and pedagogical knowledge and expertise in developing others.

Should not be:

  • NQT;
  • Teacher for whom mathematics is a particular weakness

Costs and funding:

There is no charge to schools for attending the training in Year 1.

For year 1 supply cover at a rate of £80 per half day session is paid to contribute towards the cost

of attending the local meetings.

The second year will cost £2000 per teacher.
