Models of Leadership - new LA guidance for headteachers and governing bodies

New Leadership arrangements in schools

New and innovative models of leadership are emerging all the time and, while these can bring great benefits to schools and their pupils, they can also present organisational challenge.

The Local Authority has produced a guidance document - Models of Leadership - to steer governors, headteachers and staff, through the Human Resource aspect of these arrangements, which centre around the statutory provision in the School Teachers Pay and Conditions document.

The guidance covers pay and contractual arrangements for leaders who are leading or supporting more than one school, and also considers the challenge of extended services provision.

Staff working in more than one school

It is important that, in entering into any agreements whereby staff are shared across schools or provide additional support to other schools, Governing Bodies have regard to the true costs of such arrangements. In addition to salary costs there may be additional expenditure in relation to travel, administration, staff cover, salary increases and so on.
